Why algebra goes wrong
Pre-algebra and algebra introduce abstract thinking. That is a big shift from the mostly arithmetic of earlier grades, and it is common to stumble on the way. The cause is usually something small and specific that was missed, not a lack of ability.
Two ideas make most of algebra easier to digest: keeping an equation balanced and the order of operations. We make sure those are solid, then build up from there.
How I help
I listen to how you work a problem, find the exact place the reasoning slips, and explain it in a way that fits your level. If the gap goes back to fractions or arithmetic, we go back there. Foundation first, because everything else rests on it.
For younger students I mix in some variety and keep the pace comfortable; an hour is a long time to stay focused. A fourth grader working on times tables is a different job than a high schooler, and I will tell you honestly which of those I am the right tutor for.
Topics I work on most
- Fractions, decimals, percents and integer arithmetic
- Order of operations and keeping equations balanced
- Linear equations, inequalities and graphing lines
- Systems of equations
- Exponents, radicals and polynomials
- Factoring and quadratic equations
- Rational expressions and functions
- Exponential and logarithmic functions (Algebra II)
